Crochet Bookworm Bookmark.

I learned to crochet from a babysitter when I was 8 years old. This is what she taught me to make! Not only are these little critters adorable and useful, they make a great project for kids who are just learning to crochet. This is also a great way to use up scraps of yarn.
Materials
You will need:
Yarn
J-10 Crochet Hook
White Glue or Hot Glue
Yarn Needle
2” x 2” Piece of Cardboard
Scissors
Eyes
Book
A couple of notes about the materials
Yarn - If this is your first crochet project, check that the yarn does not split easily. Nothing will frustrate a first time crocheter than yarn that splits.
Hook – I’ve found that a larger hook is easier to work with when you are just starting out. While this project calls for a J-10 hook, it can be made with any size hook.
Glue – If you a working with a young child on this project, you will want to use white glue. However, white glue takes time to dry so you may want to help your child by putting the eyes on with hot glue that will set up quickly.
Needle – In the photo you will see a plastic yarn needle. If you are working with a child, they will find this needle easy to thread. And while a plastic yarn needle will work just fine, I prefer a metal one because it is easier to weave the ends into your work.
Begin with a slip knot leaving approximately a 5” tail. You are going to create a chain that is 2” longer than your book (NOT including the tail). For this example I used a Diary of Whimpy Kid Book which ended up requiring 35 chains.
sc in the second chain from the end, sc in the next 5 chain stitches (this creates the head). Fasten off and weave in end.
Take 2” x 2” piece of cardboard and wind yarn around the board. The pom pom shown was wrapped around the board 20 times.
Take your yarn needle and thread the tail of the body. Work the needle under the tied piece of string and knot. Cut the loops to create a pom pom. Glue eyes to the head.
There you have it one bookworm bookmark! I've made dozens of these to include in treat bags!
