Lions, Tigers & Bears 7 best zoo web cams

Updated on June 5, 2012

By LESLIE A. PANFIL

1. The Houston Zoo has one of the best web cams on the net. With a large screen viewing, in living color, you can watch giraffes, rhinos and chimps from both their yard and barn.

2. While the Smithsonian National Zoo web cams don’t have the clarity and color of Houston’s zoo, you can nearly take a complete virtual tour of the zoo including: endangered black-footed ferrets, fishing cats, flamingos, golden lion tamarin, gorillas, naked mole rat, octopuses, orangutans, orangutans, pandas, sloths and tigers.

3. The Indianapolis Zoo, located in White River State Park, has 5 web cams trained on the cheetah, walrus, elephant, sea lion and penguin exhibits. The zoo plans to add a tiger cam to their impressive array of virtual zoo experiences.

4. Catch a glimpse of one of the few pandas in North America with the San Diego Zoo web cam. After years of red tape and a mountain of paperwork, this zoo was awarded a 12-year research loan of two giant pandas. Name Baj Yun and Shi Shi, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to see these cuties. The screen is small and grainy but the zoo is promising a technical upgrade soon.

5. The Memphis Zoo’s web site features a panda and polar bear web cam. The nice thing about the polar bear web cam is that it pans the large enclosure so you won’t miss any of the action.

6. The Minnesota Zoo is home to 542 species of animals. It has two cams including a beaver and dolphin cam.

7. No list would be complete without a zoo from my hometown. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has unveiled its long awaited elephant crossing exhibit and now everyone can join in the celebration by logging on to its live like.

Just like a real trip to the zoo, timing is everything. Animals are most likely to be the most active in the morning. Be patient and you are sure to spot the wildlife adventure you seek!
